Foundation Grant Opportunity

Foundation of the Month: Walton Family Foundation

The Walton Family Foundation provides more than 60% of its grants to educational programs. The foundation was established in 1987 by Sam M. Walton, founder of Wal-Mart Stores, one of the largest retailers in the United States. Specific areas of interest in the field of education include arts/humanities, business education, economic education; education associations, educational reform, faculty development, health and physical education, literacy, private and public pre-college education, science/mathematics, social sciences, and vocational and technical education. Recent grants have ranged from $20,000 to $24 million and the foundation awarded more than $50 million in 2000.

The Foundation has specific opportunities for charter schools seeking funds. The Foundation makes grants to charter schools and charter school developers in three areas:

  • Planning Grants - For organizations or individuals planning to apply for a charter school, but have not yet been approved as a charter school.
  • Start-up Grants - For approved charter schools that have not yet opened.
  • Expansion/Sustaining Grants- For schools that are open and have been operating for one to five years.
