American Academy for Liberal Education
Washington, D. C.

Providing an alternative to regional accreditation, AALE brings together local and national educational experts to provide a third-party assessment of charter school programs. AALE’s accreditation supports the entrepreneurial spirit of charter school founders by examining the quality of academic curriculum and by recognizing the diverse expertise of charter school faculty. Our growing membership reflects the high standards and performance of charter schools throughout the country, while establishing a community of like-minded charter schools.

AALE Charter School Accreditation
In 2003-2004, the American Academy for Liberal Education accredited several charter schools as it moved out of pilot phase. In 2003, AALE was awarded a significant grant from the United States Department of Education to continue accrediting charter schools that demonstrate 1.) a commitment to strengthen the study of humanities, languages and sciences in K-12 curriculum and 2.) a reliable measure of institutional health to the public, specifically parents, students, administrators, political representatives, and foundations. This year, Princeton Charter School (NJ), Black River Public School (MI), the Academy of Math and Science (AZ) and W.E.B. DuBois Academy (OH) join five other schools in distinguishing themselves through AALE accreditation. AALE’s 2004 applicants completing their self-study phase include Della Lamb Elementary Charter School (MO), KIPP Academy (TX), Paul Junior High Public Charter School (DC), and Sonoran Science Academy (AZ). Through the support of the Department of Education and the American Academy for Liberal Education, our extended activities required hiring two new staff members, in order to respond to increasing interest in our academically-focused accreditation.
