In 2001, the Fondren Foundation gave more than $9 million to education and other
issues to nonprofit organizations in Texas and throughout the United States.
Specific education interests include arts/humanities, business, charter schools, colleges and universities, education reform, engineering and technology, faculty development, leadership training, legal education, literacy, minority education, math and science, social sciences and special education. The Foundation provides grants for general support, capital campaigns, research and specific projects. Many of its education grants were for capital expenses, such as construction and renovations, as well as creating chairs, establishing endowment funds, and establishing scholarship funds. Recent grants have ranged from $50,000 to $500,000.
