The Broad Foundation provides grants to schools in most U.S. states. In 2002, the Foundation awarded more than $12 million in grants to numerous education and other organizations. Grant awards range from $7,000 to $1.4 million. The Foundation’s mission is to dramatically improve K-12 urban public education through better governance, management and labor relations. Its goals are to train a broad, deep bench of current and aspiring leaders in education; redefine the traditional roles, practices and policies of school board members, superintendents, principals and labor union leaders to better address contemporary challenges in education; attract and retain the highest quality talent to leadership roles in education; equip school systems and their leaders with modern tools for effective management; provide tangible incentives for educators to advance academic performance; and honor and showcase success wherever it occurs in urban education.
