Grantwriting Tip
Developing and Writing Grant Proposals
by
Kelly Hurt

With tax season upon us, we often wonder if our tax money is being put to good use. Well, the NCSC Team can tell you that the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) site, funded by our tax dollars, provides not only a list of all grant opportunities available to schools and other nonprofit organizations, but also provides excellent advice on how to write successful grants. The CFDA page at http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALOG.GRANT_PROPOSAL_DYN.show contains outstanding information on preparing grant proposals – and the tips therein are applicable for public and private grants.

The CFDA site covers everything from grant preparation through mailing your completed product to the funder. Tips include thinking through your project by asking yourself a series of questions and creating timelines before you begin writing, ensuring your document looks neat and clean, and securing community support for your project. The site also includes excellent information on budget preparation – an area that we often leave until after the grant is completed, but which should be considered prior to writing the grant.

Please read through this excellent two-part document and share it with your school’s grantwriter. Following the excellent advice of the CFDA will help you produce better, high-quality, competitive proposals.
