Does the mere thought of establishing a fundraising plan at your school make you break out in a cold sweat? Organizations that are the most effective at raising money have a diverse funding base. They receive money from a variety of sources, including individuals, corporations, foundations, small-scale fundraisers, events, bequests and others.

When I meet with new clients, the first item I assess is their current funding base. If they are only getting money from one key source (i.e. one large three-year federal grant), then I explain the importance of broadening their donor base. Inevitably, the first question I am asked is, “How do we get started?” There are many books and articles that explain one or even several fundraising techniques, but oftentimes these books are read and written by people who are full-time fundraisers. One great resource I recently found that provides information on a number of fundraising techniques in an easy-to-read and easy-to-implement format is called Profit Quests Fundraising.

The web site, located at http://www.profitquests.com/FundraisingTips.html, provides fundraising ideas, tips and success stories that you can review and duplicate at your school. Under “Acquiring New Donors,” for example, the site lists a number of simple ways to begin building a base of individual donors.

If you want to establish a diverse funding base for your school, we encourage you to check out the Profit Quests Fundraising web site to get some ideas on how to get started. Before you know it, fundraising will be both fun and profitable for your school, students, and teachers!
