Community Service Programs for Suspended and Expelled Students

Purpose: The Community Service Grant Program, authorized by Section 4126 of the “No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 “(P.L. 107-110) offers federal assistance to states for the purpose of providing suspended and expelled students with meaningful activities to occupy their time during their absence from regular school; to help them avoid negative behavior; and to teach them the value of service to others and their communities. The priorities for this program are:

(1) to establish or expand the community service component of community-based programs for suspended or expelled students

(2) to establish or expand, in community-based programs for suspended and expelled students, an individual or family counseling component designed to facilitate the student’s successful return to his or her school. The program must also have a community service component to be eligible for this priority area.

(3) to increase public awareness of and access to information regarding the design and operation of effective programs for suspended and expelled students within the state.

Deadline: 4 p.m. April 14, 2003

Total Amount Available: The New Hampshire Department of Education received $250,000 from the U.S. Department of Education to be made available for distribution.
